DeCesare's photo narratives about youth affected by war, trauma, and gangs explore the personal choices and social stigmas that define the fate of young people across the Americas. DeCesare will talk about the role of photography in social activism and how her website can support the efforts of educators, activists, and young people working to overcome the widespread legacy of youth violence. This program is presented in conjunction with the current exhibition Inside El Salvador, which chronicles the height of the civil war in El Salvador in the early 1980s and depicts those directly involved with the conflict, including the guerilla forces and the army, and the war's effects on the civilian population. The exhibition includes more than 30 images by DeCesare in the section 'El Salvador Inside Out,' which covers the end of the civil war, notably the murder of six Jesuit priests and the guerilla offensive in San Salvador in 1989-events that increased international pressure for the peace accords.
