These latest paintings are both a celebration of and a challenge to the traditional figure and portrait. Balkan’s background in behavioral neuroscience and sociology lends an insightful layer. These works hint to the fact that the subject is always hiding something. Even the simplest of disguises invites this interpretation. The physical disguise might be concealing something far deeper than the subject’s visage, which is exactly what Balkan encourages the viewer to ponder.
